The Affordable Care Act
In 2010, the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare was signed into law. This legislation was designed to help households obtain and be able to afford to purchase health insurance coverage. Open enrollment windows were set up to allow interested households to sign up for coverage between November 1 through December 15 of each year and Special Enrollment periods when you have a sudden loss in coverage all without health questions being asked.
The law also makes available subsidies to households that qualify based upon their income and size. These subsidies are direct payments of your health insurance premium paid by the government to your health insurance company for your coverage. While some may qualify for a subsidy that covers all of their bills, others may only qualify for a portion of their bill to be covered. The intent of the law is to help all households be able to afford coverage that suits their needs.
